Scarring Treatments – All You Need To Know

Profhilo

How do scars happen?

Scarring is your skin’s natural way of ‘welding’ itself back together after an injury. When the skin is wounded and broken, collagen is sent to the wound site to help it heal and rebuild. Scars can take a while to form, usually a few months as the collagen builds up. What causes a scar to become red and lumpy is the increase of blood supply as your body tries to heal itself.

What are the different types of scars?

Most people think scars are caused by burns or injuries. While this is true, there are many other different types. These include:

Keloid scars

Keloid scars are caused by an overproduction of tissue and collagen at the site of a wound. These are commonly seen from cartilage piercings such as the nose or ear. They can be identified by pink lumps and are often painful or itchy. They will continue to grow even after the wound has healed.

Hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars are similar to keloid scars as they result from too much collagen being produced at the site of a wound. The difference is that hypertrophic scars do not exceed past the original wound and tend to improve over time.

Contractures

Contractures are scars often caused by burns. This injury causes the skin to tighten and shrink and restrict movement in the skin.

Pitted or sunken scars

Pitted or sunken scars are usually left behind by skin conditions such as acne or chickenpox and have a pitted appearance. A loss of underlying fat can also cause this type of scar.

What are the different scarring treatments?

Luckily, many options are available to help diminish scars, including some over the counter treatments that you can try at home.

Some different scar treatment options include:

Silicone gels or sheets

Silicone gels or sheets are products that you can apply topically to healing skin (not fresh wounds). They’re available in gels or sheets that act as a self-adhesive dressing to help make the scar less visible by softening the skin during the healing process.

Steroid injections

Steroid injections reduce raised scars or keloid scars and cannot be used on flat or acne scars as this can cause pits. They work by reducing the swelling and itching, helping with the healing process over time.

PRP and PRF

PRP and PRF treatments (platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin) are procedures where a clinician will draw some of your blood to extract a concentration of special blood cells to inject directly into the area of concern. These treatments can help cells regrow and rejuvenate, adding volume to pitted scars.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are widely available both over the counter and in a treatment centre. They work by removing the epidermis layer of skin in the targeted area, which can significantly reduce the intensity of the scarring.

Bespoke facials

Bespoke facials brighten and revitalise the skin. They often include exfoliation or chemical peels that can lower the intensity of the scarring.
