Treating Hair Loss – All You Need To Know.

Hair Loss

What is hair loss or thinning?

Hair loss occurs when new hairs don’t grow to replace those that fell. It’s normal for people to lose around 50 to 100 hairs a day naturally. Hair thinning happens as you age, as your hair reduces volume and thickness. Hair loss is commonly due to genetics and can occur without ageing.

Diet deficiencies, illness, stress or genetics can cause hair thinning. Ways to slow down or stop hair thinning include eating extra protein, taking vitamin supplements, a more nutritious diet (such as the Mediterranean diet) and having good hair and scalp care.

How is hair loss or thinning treated?

There are a variety of different types of hair loss. These include; a receding hairline, bald spots, bald patches, thinning hair, male and female pattern baldness and even permanent hair loss.

There are many different hair loss treatments available, which can be overwhelming, so we’ve broken them down below.

Minoxidil

A popular solution to hair loss or thinning is to use Minoxidil, otherwise known as Rogaine. It is easily accessible, and you can buy it over the counter with a prescription. The results can take a few months to show. Your hair will return to how it was before the treatment if you stop using Minoxidil.

Finasteride

Finasteride is also known as Propecia. It is a prescription medication in the form of an oral pill which can also take several months for the effects to show. Like Minoxidil, your hair will return to its previous state if you stop taking the medication.

Micro-needling

Micro-needling is a treatment that uses a tool with hundreds of tiny needles. You use it on your scalp to encourage hair growth, and it is considered more effective when used alongside another treatment, though you can use it alone. These tiny devices are easily accessible, and you do not need a prescription.

Hair transplant

While this may sound like a scary and drastic approach to treating hair loss, it is effective and can give you lasting results. It works by a skilled surgeon taking a strip of your skin with hair or hair roots from one part of your scalp and moving it to where the baldness is. The surgery can take between 4-8 hours.

Low-level laser therapy

This treatment requires multiple sessions a week, but it can help with hair loss such as alopecia, hair loss from chemotherapy, healing and growing hair after a hair transplant and male pattern baldness.

Platelet-rich plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment that uses your own body’s plasma and specific blood cells. This procedure can cause cells to regenerate or regrow, resulting in new hair growth. PRP injections are recommended once a month for 3 months and then maintenance every 3-6 months.
