Ageing Hands
What are ageing hands?
The appearance of ageing hands is often what many people describe as ‘giving away their age’. A range of concerns can affect the look of the hands as a person gets older, including: loss of volume, wrinkles, crepey skin, dry skin, age spots and prominent veins. The hands are one of the busiest parts of the body and undergo a great many functions throughout the day, as well as being in contact with soaps and other various products.
What are the causes?
Loss of collagen and elastin from the middle layers of the skin is the main cause of ageing hands. This can affect the firm and plump look of youthful hands, as tissue density decreases and the skin becomes thinner; which can also lead to the veins on the tops of the hands becoming more noticeable. Sun exposure can accelerate the ageing process, as well as contributing to the development of age spots. UV rays can speed up the rate at which collagen breaks down and will also cause the skin to produce more melanin (the skin’s natural colourant). When UV rays are absorbed, they can damage the internal cells which present as small dark patches when excess melanin has accumulated.
