Double Chin
What is a Double Chin?
A double chin refers to the appearance of excess fatty tissue and skin beneath the chin and around the neck. The exposure of more of the skin around the neck, which will often cause a person to feel their lower face has a heavy appearance. A double chin can draw attention away from the natural contours of the jawline, giving the face an altered shape with less definition.
What are the causes?
A double chin can often appear when a person gains weight and excess fat deposits itself in this area of the body. Diet, alcohol consumption and a lack of exercise will often lead to the body accumulating extra stores of fat beneath the skin, known as subcutaneous fat. Ageing can also contribute to the development of a double chin as the skin becomes weak and less supportive to the underlying tissues. Due to the lack of elasticity in the skin, it can become loose and start to sag. This can then create an area for subcutaneous fat to settle, which can pull down.
A genetically weaker jawline and chin can result in the chin sitting further back towards the neck than is often desired. This effect leads to more exposed skin, which gives the impression that a person has extra fatty deposits and a double chin.
