What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a skin resurfacing treatment that can be used on the face, neck and hands. The aim of the procedure is to exfoliate and remove layers of the skin in order to achieve a smoother, healthier and more even complexion. Light (superficial), medium and deep peels are available on the aesthetic’s market and are chosen depending on the concerns you are looking to improve. House of Saab’s range of peels include: The Perfect Peel, Obagi Blue Peel Radiance (superficial), Obagi Blue Peel (deep) and ZO 3-step Peel.
The Experience
During the treatment process your practitioner will apply a solution to the affected area, which is then left to develop. The solution contains a variety of active ingredients and amino acids which are designed to penetrate the skin at the chosen level – light peels target the superficial layer, medium peels address the top and middle layers and a deep peel reaches the innermost layers. To obtain maximum results your practitioner may recommend that you undergo between 3 and 6 sessions, which will be discussed at your consultation. You may also be given some pre-treatment recommendations, including stopping the use of active skincare products (containing retinol, glycolic and AHAs) 3 days before your peel and not using a sunbed (or being careful not to get sunburn on the face) 2 weeks prior to the peel. A numbing cream or mild anaesthesia may be used if a medium or deep peel is recommended, or when the peel is applied to the hands or neck.
More on Patient JourneyAftercare & Results
It can take between 1 and 2 weeks for the results to become noticeable after a chemical peel. This will allow for the shedding process to take place, whereby the top layers of skin will remove themselves and reveal new, healthier skin. It is important during this period to ensure you do not pick at any flakes of skin or crusts, to reduce the risk of scarring. Your complexion may feel a little sensitive and you will need to use gentle skincare products (recommended by House of Saab) while the new skin matures, and a suitable SPF of 50 or over, to protect from the sun. Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, as well as using tanning beds for up to 14 days after the peel is also advised.
Once the outcome has developed you may find your appearance looks brighter and more radiant. Lines and wrinkles can appear reduced, the tone and texture becomes more even, pores are unclogged and acne improves.

FAQ
Am I suitable for a chemical peel?
The type of peel that could benefit you will depend on the concerns that you are affected by. A light peel improves the look of fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone and dry skin. A medium peel improves wrinkles, acne scarring and an uneven tone. A deep peel improves wrinkles that are deeper set, scars and some precancerous growths.
Are chemical peels safe?
Light and medium peels are considered to be the safest types of peels and are most commonly carried out at aesthetic clinics. A deeper peel is not always available due to the more significant side effects and recovery period. This will all be discussed at your consultation.
Is this procedure painful?
You will always be taken good care of at House of Saab. Your practitioner will ensure that you remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment and will take steps to relieve any sensitivity. A chemical peel is not usually painful, but you may feel some tingling on your skin after the solution has been applied.
Are there any side effects or risks?
During your consultation your practitioner will discuss the individual effects that your chosen peel may cause. Chemical skin peels can often increase the sensitivity of the skin, depending on your particular skin type and home care regimen. Side effects may include (but are not limited to): stinging, itching, irritation, redness, swelling, tight skin, peeling and scabbing of the skin, scarring, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. With all peels, the shedding process is a normal and expected side effect which indicates the peel is working. Sensitive skin will need to be cared for appropriately, for which the experts at House of Saab can advise.
