Facial Volume Loss
What is facial volume loss?
Facial volume loss is primarily an ageing related concern that men and women experience in their 40’s or 50’s. This condition can result in a variety of concerns, including: flattened cheeks, sagging skin, jowls, thin lips and sunken temples. The mid to lower part of the face is generally affected by facial volume loss which occurs as a result of the reduction in tissue density within the middle layers of the skin (dermis).
What are the causes?
Collagen is a substance that lives within the internal structure of the skin and helps to maintain the volume that is characteristic of a youthful look. When a person reaches their 20’s the amount of collagen that the skin naturally produces will start to decline – usually at around 1 – 1.5% each year. At this rate it may take several years for the effects to become noticeable, which will often contribute to weakened and thinning skin. As the skin also loses elasticity and hydration, the stretchy properties become compromised and it loses the ability to bounce back. When these factors combine, it leads to loose and sagging skin that hangs around the lower face and jawline, giving the face a tired look.
